Mississauga Academy of Medicine
“The Mississauga Academy of Medicine, launched in August 2011 at the University of Toronto Mississauga, reflects a pivotal partnership between the Faculty of Medicine , at the University of Toronto, the University of Toronto Mississauga, the Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre.
In 2011, the Mississauga Academy opened with 54 first-year students and will reach a projected total enrollment of 216 students by 2015. Located across two floors inside the new Terrence Donnelly Health Sciences Complex, the Mississauga Academy provides state-of-the-art classrooms, seminar rooms, computer facilities, learning spaces and laboratories. A fully-equipped student lounge and a unique outdoor terrace provide students with contemporary, comfortable spaces to socialize and relax. Advanced videoconferencing and other technologies connects students across multiple teaching sites, allowing students to share lectures and learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
The Mississauga campus lies on 225 acres of protected greenbelt along the Credit River. The campus boasts a number of award-winning facilities, including the Recreation, Athletics and Wellness Centre and the Hazel McCallion Academic Learning Centre — a $34-million library and information complex . For travel between U of T campuses and affiliated hospital sites, free shuttle transportation is available.

Trillium Health Centre is one of Canada’s largest academically-affiliated hospitals, providing quality and safe health care to more than one million residents in Mississauga, southwest Toronto and the surrounding areas. Trillium is a 790-bed regional referral centre with highly specialized, complex programs in advanced cardiac, vascular, stroke, neurosciences, orthopaedics, seniors’ health and sexual assault/domestic violence services. Trillium-Mississauga houses the emergency department, inpatient units and a surgical centre, while an urgent care centre, day surgery and other outpatient programs are located at Trillium-West Toronto.
The Credit Valley Hospital is a professional, caring, health-care organization that promotes life, health and innovation, providing quality patient care to Mississauga and the surrounding region. Credit Valley covers over 1 million square feet and is a 382-bed acute care inpatient facility, offering an ambulatory care centre, a 24-emergency care centre and specialized regional programs for clinical genetics, renal care, maternal-child care and cancer care. The regional women’s and children’s health centre features an advanced level 2 neonatal intensive care unit and the largest paediatric oncology satellite program in Ontario, outside of the Hospital for Sick Children.

Academy Staff
Dr. Pamela Coates, a Mississauga pediatrician, brings many years of experience in undergraduate medical education to her role as Director of the Mississauga Academy of Medicine. Dr. Coates graduated with a medical degree from McGill University and went on to practice emergency and general pediatrics at Montreal Children’s Hospital. In 1984, Dr. Coates joined the pediatric department at the former Mississauga Hospital and in 1985 she became a founding member of the pediatric department at The Credit Valley Hospital. In 1996, Dr. Coates was appointed chief of pediatrics, as well as medical director of the hospital’s pediatric program. Dr. Coates provides mentorship and leadership in the hospital, in the community and in the classroom.
